Parker, Jr. Issue Date 31st Oct 2014 Source 215, The Wine Advocate The 2012 Syrah is a compelling example of this varietal. It is 100% Syrah, but it smells as if it includes a large quantity of Viognier. Huge notes of flowers, honeysuckle and lavender jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored wine along with notes of scorched earth, charcoal, smoked meats and a touch of steak tartar. A wine of great intensity and magnificent concentration, it could easily achieve perfection in a few years. Drink now through 2026. The mystical John Kongsgaard came out of the Newton winemaking factory where he was mentored by the great Michel Rolland. However, he has had his own operation for many years in the cool Coombsville hills east of the town of Napa. He also uses purchased fruit from some of Napa’s finest growers, particularly the Hudson Vineyard. His estate includes six acres on Atlas Peak and six acres in Coombsville, and he is in the process of clearing another tract for planting. Although his total acreage is small, the wines are artisanal, individualistic and filled with personality and flavor. Anyone who believes Kongsgaard wines are too alcoholic or rich is missing out on some of the world’s most pleasure-filled and complex elixirs. The Chardonnays include a basic cuvee, which comes from selected parcels John Kongsgaard has long worked with in the Hudson and Hyde vineyards (from Old Wente clonal materials). There is also an estate Chardonnay, the riveting, prodigious The Judge named after Kongsgaard’s father. It comes from a six-acre parcel planted in 1975 in Coombsville that never yields more than ten tons of fruit. It is Old Wente clone material, which old-timers claim, but can’t prove, came from Burgundy’s grand cru Corton-Charlemagne. With two great vintages (2012 and 2013) in the pipeline, and with 2014 looking superb at the time of my visit, Kongsgaard is overflowing with liquid treasures.

プライドワイナリーが位置するスプリング・マウンテンの頂上付近は1920年代まで電話もなく、40年代まで電気も通らない、50年代になってやっとセントヘレナに通じる道ができたという山奥です。ブドウ畑をつくるにはたいへんなところでしたが、とても素晴らしい自然に囲まれ、美しいところです。この土地でのワイン作りの歴史は長く、土地の人々にはなじみのサミットランチという最初のオーナーがブドウ畑をはじめたのが1869年という記録が残っています。何人もの手を経て、現オーナーのプライド氏によって1990年買い取られ、 プライド・マウンテン・ヴィンヤーズとなりました。ワインメーカーにボブ・フォリー氏を迎え、毎年のように賞賛され、大変評判の高いワインを造り続けてきました。 2007年からはボブ・フォリー氏の指揮の下、愛弟子のサリー・ジョンソン女史がワインメイキングの中心となり山系ブドウを使った凝縮感に溢れたプライドならではのワインを造っています。カリフォルニア州以外での入手が困難なブティックワイナリーとしてワイン愛好者たちの間では常に話題のワイナリーです。 Wine Advocate #207 Jun 2013 Robert Parker 99 Drink: 2013-2023 $149-$285 In contrast, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (14.7% natural alcohol) is an equal part blend of Napa and Sonoma fruit. There is no doubting the Cabernet Sauvignon in this wine! Classic notes of cedarwood, underbrush, licorice, black currants and tobacco leaf are textbook definitions of this varietal. The color is even denser than the Reserve Claret's, and the bouquet offers additional notes of Chinese black tea. Elegant with great acid as well as stunning concentration, richness and a full-bodied mouthfeel, this is another world-class effort that pushes the envelope toward perfection. It is a remarkable success for the vintage, partly due to the fact that the extremes of weather experienced on the valley floor were less problematic for these high altitude sites. Very deep purple-black colored, it sashays out of the glass with beautifully provocative black cherries, blueberry compote and warm cassis scents followed by candied violets, molten chocolate, licorice and fallen leaves plus hints of black olives and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals explosive energy wrapped in a silken carpet of exquisitely fine-grained tannins, finishing with amazing freshness and perfume. Estate-Grown may be one of the all-time great offerings from Stag’s Leap Vineyard. It’s not easy to say after 40 years of achievement, but it is certainly a candidate for one of the finest Stags Leap Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons ever made, particularly under this moniker (We have to exclude the Cask 23 and the Fay Vineyard.) Opulent, with fabulous texture, a dense purple color, great blueberry and blackcurrant fruit with spice and flowers, this is sexy Cabernet Sauvignon that should drink beautifully for another 20 years or more. The balance is sensational.

This wine boasts an excellent texture, although the finish is austere. Sweet black currant and blackberry fruit are wrapped with subtle oak and a weedy, tobacco herbaceousness. It is deep, dense, full-bodied, and impressively textured as well as concentrated. However, the high tannin profile suggests it should be cellared for 4-5 years; it will last 20-25 years.

This is one of the lighter, more perfumed vintages of the Jensen in recent memory. Crushed flowers and sweet red berries abound on the beautifully knit finish. Even though the 2013 is a bit on the lighter side, the 100% whole clusters are totally integrated. Above all else, the 2013 speaks to grace. Josh Jensen adds that total rainfall for 2013 was just 4 inches versus the 15-18 that was normal in what he jokingly refers to as "the last century." This is a surprisingly delicate wine, especially considering the drought conditions.
